    Maui on a Budget

Stay Savvy with your Money: Plan a Smart Family Vacation to Maui

Guest Writer- Kendra Thornton "Former Orbitz Director of Communications and promoted into full time position in the care of Motherhood"

Hard-earned and well deserved, every family needs a vacation from time to time. While tough economic times have many families staying close to home or even cancelling their getaways altogether, the savvy planner can take their family on a trip of a lifetime without breaking the bank!

With a little research and some smart shopping, you can give your family the vacation they deserve. There is no need to be traveling out of the country come Spring break, think about places within the U.S. that feel like a tropical getaway in itself. My husband and I are huge fans of Maui; so this Spring Break vacation keep these money saving tips in mind and keep your pockets a little fuller!

    Work Those Credit Cards

While charging an entire family vacation to your credit cards is not a smart financial move, using credit cards that offer rewards like free hotel stays and airline miles can save your family major cash with minimal effort. Just be sure to pay those balances off in full every month!

    No Season Like the Off-Season

If possible, book your choice from a plethora of options in fabulous hotels to in stay when visiting Maui during the off-season. Airfare, hotels and activities will be at their cheapest, and you'll have the added benefit of less stressful traffic and less crowded beaches!

    Skip the Fancy Resorts

Don't pay for a name! While the fancy resorts certainly have their appeal, even their tiniest rooms come with a hefty price tag. Always remember that Maui thrives on tourism, and all of the visitors need somewhere to sleep: staying in a locally owned hotel or vacation rental can drastically reduce the cost of your trip and frees up your cash for something other than a place to rest your head.

    Hit the Beach!

Maui is home to several of the world's most beautiful beaches, and you can experience all of them for the cost of a bathing suit and some sunscreen! The water is beautiful and always warm. Swimming, snorkeling, and lounging: the beach provides hours of inexpensive entertainment and provides the perfect location for building the sort of memories that will last a lifetime.

    Playing the Timeshare Game

This tip isn't helpful for everyone, but those who can take advantage will save quite a bit of money! You'll find ticket kiosks all over the island, selling activities like luaus and parasailing for a fraction of the regular price. If you own your home and meet certain income requirements, you will eligible for these discounts after attending an early-morning timeshare presentation.

While sitting through an hour-long sales pitch doesn't sound like the best way to save money, you need only attend long enough to have your discount excursion tickets validated. It only costs a few hours of your time to save hundreds of dollars. Plan your vacation smart and enjoy!
