This Cranberry Margarita is vibrant, tart, and super festive. With tequila, cranberry juice, lime, and orange liqueur, it's a bold twist on an old favorite!

Looking for a holiday cocktail that checks all the boxes? This Cranberry Margarita is bright, festive, and full of bold flavor - the kind of drink that feels just right at a party or curled up by the fire.
It's a simple twist on the classic margarita, made with tequila, cranberry juice, fresh lime, and orange liqueur. Tart, citrusy, and just the right amount of sweet - it's the holiday sip you'll come back to year after year.
This has been a favorite on the blog for over a decade, but this year I finally got a chance to take some new photos. And wow - that sure is an upgrade! The old photos below did not do this cocktail justice. 😉

Ingredients & Substitutions
- Tequila - Silver (blanco) tequila works best here for its clean, crisp flavor, but reposado adds a warmer, oak-aged depth if you prefer. Use what you love!
- Orange liqueur - Cointreau or triple sec both work well. If you want a smoother, slightly richer option, Grand Marnier is a great upgrade.
- Cranberry juice - Use 100% cranberry juice for a more tart, bold flavor or cranberry juice cocktail if you prefer a sweeter sip. Either works - just adjust your lime juice to taste.
- Fresh lime juice - This is non-negotiable. Bottled lime juice won't deliver the same bright, citrusy punch. Squeeze it fresh for the best result.
- Garnishes (optional) - Fresh or sugared cranberries, rosemary sprigs, and lime wedges make the drink feel festive and look party-ready.
- Sugar for the rim!
I'm a fan of serving cocktails up in stemless glasses, which I am way less likely to spill. But I'm also kind of love with this set with cactus stem margarita glasses!
How to Make a Cranberry Margarita
- Run a lime wedge around the rim of each glass. Dip the rim into a shallow plate of sugar until evenly coated. Set aside.
- Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.
- Add tequila, orange liqueur, cranberry juice, and lime juice.
- Shake vigorously until well chilled.
- Strain into ice‑filled glasses.
- Garnish with rosemary, cranberries, and lime wedges if you like, and serve immediately.
Quick Tips
Use fresh lime juice. Bottled lime juice might be convenient, but it often tastes flat or overly acidic. Fresh-squeezed lime juice gives your margarita that bright, zesty kick that balances the cranberry and tequila perfectly. It's worth the extra minute.
Sweeten to taste. If you prefer your cocktails on the sweeter side, stir in a splash of simple syrup, honey, or agave nectar. This is especially helpful if you're using 100% cranberry juice, which tends to be more tart than cranberry juice cocktail.
Chill your glasses. Pop your glasses in the freezer for 10-15 minutes before serving. It's a small step that makes a big difference - your margarita stays cold longer, and the frosty rim adds a touch of that cocktail bar feel at home.
Shake it like you mean it. Don't just give it a gentle swirl - really shake the cocktail shaker until the outside feels cold and frosty to the touch. This not only chills the drink but also helps all the flavors blend together smoothly.
Garnish with intention. The rosemary sprig, lime wedge, and cranberries aren't just for looks - they add fresh aroma and a festive touch that makes each glass feel a little special.

Fun Variations to Try
- Sugared or salted rim: Dip the glass rim in lime juice and then in sugar or salt before serving for a classic finish.
- Herbal twist: Swap rosemary for thyme or sage for a different aromatic touch.
- Batch it up: Multiply the recipe for a pitcher - great for holiday gatherings.
- Frozen version: Blend all the ingredients with ice for a slushy, festive treat.

These are so pretty. We made them for NEw Years Eve, and they were a big hit.
